I originally read the quote, "IN THE GRAND TRADITION OF HEILEIN'S STARSHIP TROOPERS...", and thought, "Yeah, right.", but these are actually quite thoughtful books dealing with lots of interesting philosophical issues... believe it or not.

They go some way to explaining the back story to the original game, if that's in the least bit necessary for such a game, and then take the action in all sorts of interesting directions. The continuity does need some work as the heros are left naked on an alien space ship at the end of book 3 and then mysteriously have clothes and weapons at the beginning of book 4...?

You can still buy these new via Amazon but these must have been bought soon after publication. The cover's aren't as well looked after as the ones illustrated above but they are in reasonable nick - they have been read after all (I didn't want to read them but I found myself hooked!)!
